QoG lunch seminar with Sergi Pardos-Prado

Research profile seminar

The QoG Institute regularly organizes seminars related to research on Quality of Government. The seminars address the theoretical and empirical problem of how political institutions of high quality can be created and maintained as well as the effects of Quality of Government on a number of policy areas, such as health, the environment, social policy, and poverty.

Speakers are invited from the international research community and experts from NGOs and other organizations to the lunch seminars. The seminars last for one hour and include a short presentation by the speaker (30-35 min) followed by a joint discussion about the topic.

If nothing else is indicated, the seminars are held in English.

"Corruption and preferences for decentralization" (with Theresa Kuhn, University of Amsterdam).

While citizens generally think that corruption is problematic, they often fail to punish corrupt political behavior. We study this interesting puzzle in the context of support for decentralization. Using an original survey experiment in Spain, we test the effect of national and regional corruption primes on support for decentralization. We find that corruption at the central level consistently increases public support for decentralization. In contrast, regional-level corruption strengthens support for recentralization in the context of welfare-decreasing corruption, while it does not lead to more support for recentralization in the case of welfare-enhancing corruption. Our results are driven by decreasing levels of satisfaction with and trust in the central government, and are independent from partisan and in-group biases. Analyses of the European Values Survey support the cross-national validity of our findings. This research has important implications for research on the behavioral consequences of corruption, and on drivers of support for decentralization.
